ZDayz for Mr. K

Every year when I write my article about the annual ZDayz event I comment on how its always perfectly timed right after my first race of the season for Global Time Attack Road Atlanta, and then I talk about how much fun it is, and then how beautiful the Smokey Mountains are, and then the drinking, and the driving (not in that order), and then more drinking… but this year I wanted to focus on something far more important; the family – my Nissan family!

The first Z car was created by Mr. K in 1969, and from that day forty six years ago all the way up until today his vision has inspired generations of gear heads and instilled a passion into men and women of all ages, from all over the world. The Z car community is unrivaled in size, passion and most importantly friendliness and camaraderie. I have met some of my best friends through a shared passion in the Nissan Z/G and continue to meet like minded people, every year at every race, and every event. The Z car has led me down a personal and professional path in racing as a driver, of my own G35, and crew of a World Challenge 370Z. I wouldn’t have been able to do any of those things without the amazing group of people that make the community what it is, and at its core and most importantly; thank Mr. K for his vision and creation of something much more than a line of cars, but rather a lifetime passion of performance excellence and a community larger than a brand or four wheels and an engine. Unfortunately Mr. K passed away earlier this year at he impressive age of 105, and with his passing left a legacy to those of us who care as deeply for the ideals and spirit of the Z car as he did. ZDayz is the embodiment of that spirit and as such this year seemed to be a bit more special than previous.

ZDayz 3Needless to say the Nissan / Z name are important to me and many others. Luckily I get to see these people, who are equally passionate and most importantly just as crazy as me, a few times a year; with the best of these occasions being ZDayz! This is my 5th consecutive ZDayz and every year we get a collection of the most dedicated Z fanatics from every region in the country. From the Atlanta G/Z Club to BAMA GZR, Ohio G Club, Great Lakes Z Club, Carolina Z Club and even members from as far away as Hawaii and Canada; every region of North America is represented, with the best people and cars they have to offer. ZDayz isn’t just about the cars though, its more about the people. Catching up since the last event, talking about whats new with their cars and life, sharing a beer or two, or 37… its the people that makes it. Every year I look forward to 700 of my closest family members descending on the small town of Fontana Village nestled at the base of America’s curviest road, The Tail of the Dragon, in the gorgeous spring time scenery of the Smoky Mountains. If there was such a thing as Z heaven… this would be it! I can’t describe it any more than to tell you that it is something every Z enthusiast should experience and I couldn’t even begin to describe the event in just these few paragraphs, if at all. Be sure to join us in 2016 and visit the ZDayz website for more information.
